In The Shadow Of A Fan

The director of the 'Political Cartoon' is doing some amazing work with shadows in his short. About a third of it takes place in a NYC apt. which has a dark, dimly lit feel. There is a constant, slowly rotating fan that casts a flickering shadow about the room.bw_fan_rig
One of the myriad of jobs as a Animation Director is to figure out how to achieve the gag the director wants without killing the animator in the process.

I wanted the increments of rotation to be slightly organic so that the fan had a slightly uneven rotation. Its imperceptible visually , but the aesthetic effect is that the fan is old and worn and slightly off balance causing a less mechanical feel.
Its 42 moves before an entire rotation. This fan is on the only speed it has left...Low!

lights moving, shadows moving, camera moving...but why, man? why?
I just watched Flight Plan. Great flique to watch for camera=mood/state of mind. the movement and choreography with performance is pretty groovy at times. the movie wont change your life though.
I like to see you and ethan getting all these elements moving.
If it needs to get intense, that is a good way to do it. Blade Runner has light and shadow moving in every shot. for me that is one of the things that sets it apart from the others.
